Text Box:              The office of the Chief Commissioner of Customs, Gujarat Zone, Ahmedabad, started functioning with effect from 28th March, 2000. Prior to that, the Chief Commissioner of Central Excise and Customs, Vadodara, was supervising both Excise and Customs works in the Gujarat region. The Gujarat Customs Zone has jurisdiction over the state of Gujarat as well as over Union territories of Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Under this zone, the length of coastline is about 1660 kms. which is about 20% of the total coastline of the country. In this zone, the length of land border with Pakistan is of about 500 kms.  
 
             The Zone has 34 functional Customs stations from where import and export takes place. The Customs stations include 6 ICDs, 20 CFSs, 19 Ports,  2 Foreign Post Offices and one Air Cargo Complex. Besides the Customs stations, there are 43 field formations from where normal import export work do not take place. However, these formations like Shore Guard Units (SGUs) and Road Checking Parties (RCPs) are performing functions relating to anti-smuggling and security. Amongst other Customs stations, Alang Shipbreaking Yard in Bhavnagar and Surat Hira Bourse in Surat occupy unique position in the country. Alang is the biggest ship breaking yard in the country. Surat Hira Bourse is one of the few diamond bourses in the country, dealing with import of rough diamonds and export of cut and polished diamonds.
